November 25: European City Planning with Rick Steves

6:00 p.m. PT / 9:00 p.m. ET | REGISTER

Rick has long admired European city planning (and has photographed innovative solutions he hopes might inspire Americans to be as creative) — for example, how pedestrian zones keep downtown districts lively, how public transit and bike lanes get more love than cars, how climate change is taken seriously, and how heritage is honored while infrastructure is modernized for efficiency. Rick had so much fun giving a keynote address to the Washington State chapter of the American Planning Association last month that he wanted to share the talk with his MNT family. So, mind the gap as you step on board for a fun and insightful hour that may get you thinking about how to make your own community more efficient, energetic, and…European.

Lisa Friend’s Trip Report: Italy’s Puglia

This event was recorded on November 4, 2024.

Lesser-known Puglia spans Italy's southern Adriatic coast, offering craggy shores, sun-bleached towns, and ancient history. Tour guide Lisa Friend joins us to share tales and insights from her trip through this backdoor region. In Bari, Puglia's coastal capital, we witness theatric processions by lantern light at the Festival of Saint Nicholas. Then, we head underground to explore the Grotte di Castellana cave system, duck into cone-shaped trulli houses in Alberobello, and climb the perfectly octagonal Castel del Monte. We cap our journey with side-trips to Matera's 9,000-year-old dwellings and Caserta's Royal Palace. Salute!
