Hi from Rick: The Making of a Travel Writer
In 1978, after four summers backpacking through Europe, I needed more. I grabbed my favorite travel partner, Gene, and whispered in his ear, "Go East young man." He nodded and we set out on the trip of our lives: The Hippie Trail from Istanbul to Kathmandu.
While I packed extremely light, I took along a big hardbound empty book, which I filled with 60,000 words describing our adventure, and my trusty Pentax K1000 to capture the fun on film. That journal was stowed away for over 40 years…nearly forgotten. Then, during the pandemic, I read it. It was like going on an anthropological dig into a 23-year-old kid named Rick Steves — vivid, candid, rough, and unguarded…curiously insightful.
