Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to France's Champagne Region
Just 45 minutes from central Paris by frequent TGV (bullet) train, the effervescent city of Reims is famous for its royal history, its towering cathedral…and Champagne. We'll meet at our hotel at 5 p.m. for a short "Bienvenue à Reims" meeting. Then we'll take an orientation walk through the heart of Reims, followed by time to get acquainted over dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Reims.
Day 2: All Day in Reims
We'll spend our morning on a walking tour through Reims' historic city center, where we'll learn about the design and history of its glorious Gothic cathedral (more than two dozen kings and queens of France were crowned here over the course of six centuries). The cathedral and its surrounding neighborhood were virtually destroyed during World War I, then rebuilt during the Art Deco age, which is delightfully reflected in the design and décor of Reims' downtown buildings. This afternoon we'll learn about this region's most famous product — Champagne — with a tasting courtesy of a local producer. Dinner will be on your own this evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Reims.
Day 3: Battlefields and Lessons of Verdun
We'll meet our bus and driver today and take a short drive to the historic WWI battlefields at Verdun. We'll visit the ruins and monuments of one of Europe's costliest battles of attrition, where hundreds of thousands of French and German soldiers perished. Our day will end in France's Alsace region, the ultimate Franco-Germanic blend. Tonight we'll share a dinner of Alsatian specialties in the town of Colmar.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Colmar.
Day 4: All Day in Colmar
Today is devoted to exploring the enchanting town of Colmar. We'll start the day with a walking tour, wandering over cobbled lanes lined with leaning, half-timbered buildings and learning about the historic importance of the community's canals. We'll wrap things up at one of Rick's favorite museums in Europe — the Unterlinden, home to the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald. You'll have this afternoon and evening free to explore more of the city's sights and pedestrian-friendly lanes, and to enjoy more Alsatian specialties on your own.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Colmar.
Day 5: The Route du Vin
Let's take off and explore the region's scenic Route du Vin, where colorful villages and vineyards carpet the foothills of the Vosges Mountains — birthplace of the region's very dry Rieslings and aromatic Gewürztraminers. Our first stop is the imposing Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, perched sky-high in the Vosges Mountains. After lunch in a small Alsatian village, we'll wander through the vineyards and find the perfect winery to sample some local varieties. Then we'll return to Colmar, where you'll have the late afternoon and evening free.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Colmar.
Day 6: A Hearty Taste of Burgundy
This morning we'll drive from the Teutonic tidiness of Alsace to the red-tiled villages of Burgundy and its bustling wine capital of Beaune. After some free time for lunch, we'll hit the ground walking with a tour of the town and its eye-opening medieval charity hospital, the Hôtel Dieu. Tonight we'll have a Burgundian dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Beaune.
Day 7: Market Day and Vineyards
It's outdoor market day in Beaune! Your morning will be free for rubbing elbows with locals sampling smelly cheeses, creamy pâtés, and fresh produce while doing their weekly shopping. This afternoon we set off for Burgundy's legendary and beautiful Côte d'Or wine country, where we'll have a picnic lunch together at a local domaine, along with a tasting of its celebrated harvest. We'll return to Beaune later this afternoon, where you'll be free for discoveries and dinner on your own. Escargots, anyone?
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Beaune.
Day 8: To the Alpine Peaks of Chamonix
This morning we'll make a beeline for western Europe's highest point, Mont Blanc, arriving in the picturesque resort town of Chamonix in time to get acquainted with all the alpine thrills this charming city offers. This evening we'll enjoy a traditional dinner of raclette or fondue together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Chamonix.
Day 9: Free Day in the French Alps
Today is all yours to enjoy the wonders of the French Alps. You can choose among several great hiking trails with stunning views of Mont Blanc and a supporting cast of Alps that seem to stretch forever. For one of Europe's great alpine thrills (weather permitting), take Europe's longest vertical gondola rides up to the 12,600-foot Aiguille du Midi viewpoint. From there, mini-gondolas take travelers over the snowfields and on to Italy (and back)!
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Chamonix.
Day 10: From Peaks to Provence
Sit back and rest those hiking muscles as we spend our day driving south to sunny Provence, enjoying the countryside along the way. We'll stop for lunch and a boat ride in exquisite Annecy — hands down France's most beautiful lakefront town. We'll arrive at our history-rich, Provençal destination of Vaison-la-Romaine in time to get oriented and enjoy dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and a lot of stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Vaison-la-Romaine.
Day 11: Roman Provence
We'll spend our morning sifting through the 2,000-year-old site of ancient Vaison-la-Romaine. There we'll tour the ruins of a sprawling Roman mansion and the 6,000-seat Roman theater that's still used for performances today. Consider this a warm-up act for the most impressive of all Roman theaters — the Theater of Orange — which we'll drive to and experience this afternoon.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 1 hour. Sleep in Vaison-la-Romaine.
Day 12: Vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône
This morning, we'll drive through some of Europe's most picturesque villages and vineyards as we make our way to one of our favorite wineries. We'll stop there for a refreshing lunch and the chance to sample some formidable Côtes du Rhône wines at their source. Then we'll return to Vaison for free time this afternoon.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and a lot of stairs. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Vaison-la-Romaine.
Day 13: Exquisite Aix-en-Provence
Today we'll continue south through Provence's intoxicating countryside, making our way to the affluent, artsy town of Aix-en-Provence, where we'll tour its pedestrian-friendly center with our local guide. This afternoon you'll have more time to explore the colorful lanes, shops, and galleries of Aix-en-Provence before we gather this evening to share travel memories and toast new friends at our farewell dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Aix-en-Provence.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. It's an easy 30-minute bus, shuttle, or taxi ride to the Marseille airport. For those staying longer, your guide will be happy to send you off in the right direction and help with any trip-planning needs. Au revoir et merci!

The depth and variety of experiences was outstanding. We appreciated Julie and Janet's local expertise, insights and and the sharing of personal experiences. As usual, the local guides were amazing (i.e., the Verdun Battlefield was brought to life with our guide)

The strength of this tour was the great guides and the great group. The tour provided an opportunity to visit places I would likely not get to on my own, all of which I enjoyed. Both Julie and Janet were top-notch: very knowledgeable, attentive to the needs of the tour members, and great to travel with. They fostered an atmosphere that brought the group together and let us learn about the culture and places we were visiting.

"No one thing really stands out. While I enjoyed each of our stops, the strongest memory I will have of this trip is the group that travelled with us. While our groups have been good on most of the 9 RS tours we've done, this was one of the most cohesive, attentive, and respectful groups."

We enjoy Rick Steves tours because it seems like all we have to do is get there and the rest is taken care of. We learned so much about the history of the Eastern France region, and French/European history in general. We appreciate that the tour was very active but not punishing. The food, the wine, and the camaraderie with our fellow travelers was unforgettable!

"Learning about the (good) German influence in the Eastern France region and how this has morphed into a culture that is truly unique to this area of France. Also, (wow 2.0) the Roman influence in the Southern region of Provence and how nice the weather is there."

We did the Best of Eastern France tour with our guide Julie, who also had Janet Henderson along as a trainee and co-guide. This was our fourth Rick Steves tour. Everything went smoothly and according to the published itinerary. We packed a lot of things into that 2-week period. I appreciate the little extra side trips such as a visit to the Duke's castle (forgot his name) for wine tasting, olive oil tasting and santon making demonstration, etc.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"I don't know that there was one specific moment. The lunch that we had at Mourchon winery was amazing, the stop in Annecy (with boat ride tour of the lake) was wonderful, and there was another stop at a little town that I didn't quite catch the name of... sounded like Iggy-something. The open air markets at Annecy and Beaune were incredible. Being in the Alps in Chamonix was wonderful, although the weather was such that we elected not to take the gondola up the mountain. "

This was our third Rick Steves Europe tour, and like the other two not disappointing. I did come down with COVID on day four, so did miss a few of the group activities. Every member of the tour, and especially the tour guide, were very sympathetic.

"My WOW moment was our days in Chamonix and especially taking the gondola ride up Mont-Blanc, the view of the French Alps were "breathtaking"! If I'm allowed a second wow moment it has to be the vineyard tour and wine tasting at Mourchon Wines in the Cotes du Rhone. And the picnic lunch wasn't too shabby either. "

Great itinerary/experienced and wonderful guide/good group -- overall an amazing experience. This disadvantage is that there were 28 in our group - way too many people. I do not know if we will return for another RS tour (this was our 6th).

"We visited two towns for lunch only - they were my favorite places: Eguisheim and Annecy. I wish that our itinerary could have included these lovely areas in which we could have stayed. Eguisheim is magical - much better than the larger nearby town of Colmar. Annecy is a mini-Venice and Lake Como, wrapped up as a beautiful French town. These two, unexpected areas, provided two "wow" moments for me. "

This was our 10th Rick Steves tour, and we have traveled in France both on RS tours and on our own. We chose this tour as Eastern France is an area of the country new to us, and we always appreciate how much more we learn from the experience when on a guided tour - not only from our guide but from our fellow tour members.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Unlike other tours we have been on, where there are moments of total "wow", this was more of a genuinely lovely experience throughout. It was what we expected, and certainly did not disappoint. If we had to choose one thing, which was optional "on our own" it would be the train to the ice caves in Chamonix. Our group was talking among ourselves and agreed that it would be great if that was included as part of the tour. It's not weather dependent, and would be a great group activity upon arrival."

Different from other RS Tours we have been on, but very enjoyable. Smaller towns but the details and historical content was amazing. "Not sure of one "Wow" moment as I was amazed by Chamonix, captured by the street markets in Beaune and Aix, and overwhelmed by the sights of the battle fields and cemetery of Verdun. Our tour guide Chris and the entire tour group were a joy to be with and the French country side isn't too bad either. Our timing was great with being able to see grapes being picked, light shows in Reims and Beaune, and just getting up to Aiguille du Midi in time to see Mont Blanc before the weather got too cloudy in Chamonix. Then there were the Roman ruins in Reims, Vaison and Orange plus the German charm of Colmar. The wine tastings got better and better and the farewell meal was fabulous

"I was looking forward to Chamonix and despite the rotten weather it didn't disappoint. I've hiked up glaciers and ridden on top of them, but never been inside one before. The new gondolas down to the ice cave were great and being able to experience the immensity of glaciers before they disappear was fantastic. Thank you to our guide Chris for allowing us to stay longer on our leaving day to have time to see Mont Blanc from the Auguille du Midi observation point. Breath taking views."

This was the best experience of my 3 Rick Steves' tour so far Of course I hope there will be many more tours. It was a wonderful tour with a phenomenal guide, interesting & friendly tour mates & a well-designed itinerary to showcase the best of French culture, cuisine & wine. Outstanding guides, Virginié and Steve and coach driver Pasqual !! They had the wonderful combination of knowledge, relatability, organization, experience, and humor. Our traveling group was, as usual, friendly, respectful, with positive attitudes. Itinerary was great with a lot of learning experiences and time to explore. So, obviously, I enjoyed myself very much! The wine, cheese, and pain chocolat helped too🙂

This was an excellent tour, filled with history, many activities and a good deal of free time to explore on our own time. There were 28 of us plus our full-time guide, Toni, as well as several local guides. The group was friendly and harmonious, with virtually everyone getting along.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Most significantly would be Toni's ability to connect with virtually everyone in the group. She definitely had it together for the whole trip. I would also comment positively on the places we tasted French wines. We have had French wine for years, and not particularly impressed with them. This trip provided a lot of information on how various wines were produced, and we now have a new appreciation for French wines."

"As great as the tour was (this being our 6th), there was no WOW moment for me. In the past a WOW moment for me was seeing "God's handiwork;" a view, a mountain, etc. In Chamonix we were not able to see Mont Blanc and the French Alps because of the weather. In fact, the weather was so bad that we all got refunds for the gondola."

If you've been to more than a few RS tours, you expect your experience will be "outstanding," and this tour didn't disappoint: RS leader, check; bus driver, check; local guides, check; accommodations, check; itinerary, check. What was appreciated was the "free time" and finding my own meals at times. Group meals are important but not always what I would choose. Would recommend the tour to others, but also encourage them to continue exploring after the tour.

"I was EXPECTING it to be in Chamonix but weather nixed that. If you've been to enough countries and cities, you realize they all sort of blend to a sense of sameness. How many flying buttress cathedrals before you're not impressed. So for this tour, I give my Wow vote to the camaraderie of the tour group. It was incredible that all 28 of us blended like we'd been long time friends, and continued post tour time. This was something not evident at this level in previous five tours."

"The moment that deserves a Wow would be seeing the Mer de Glacé glacier close up after taking the cogwheel train from Chamonix to Montenvers. All of the scenery in the Alps was gorgeous but we were limited by cloudy, rainy, cold weather and trips up the Aiguille du Midi were sadly cancelled (and refunded). Our goal had been to take the Panoramic télécabine over the glacier to Italy but that was also closed which made seeing the Mer de Glacé even more special. "

Wonderful tour, from start to finish. I have a few quibbles but nothing major. My vegetarian meals were for the most part very good. I love visiting smaller towns and shopping at local markets and making new friends along the way.

I love how the RS tours allow for the spirit of independent travelers to take advantage of a FABULOUS guide, use our time wisely, and help us see and access experiences that would be hard to arrange as an independent traveler. This tour was a lovely slower pace, with less blockbuster sights, but full of fabulous small moments that make travel magic. This was my 15th tour, so I clearly enjoy the RS way, but this tour ranks as one of my top favorites, mostly due to our guide. SHE WAS AMAZING.

"I always say I enjoy RS tours because every day there some little surprise, something new that you have never experienced before. Some days they are big wows, like paragliding off the mountain. Some days there are little wows, like drinking wine in the vineyard where the grapes were grown. He was entertaining, a good story teller (his knowledge of French history and the country overall was amazing) and an overall great guide. He watched the weather in Chamonix and made a slight change to our schedule so that we would have a better chance of going to the top of the viewpoint-Aiguille du Midi when it was clear and we did! Fantastic!

"Oh my, really so many. I guess I would choose our afternoon at the Chateau du Rully with the Count. Arnaud had our group gather provisions from the local Saturday market in Beaune for a picnic at the chateau. Arriving at the chateau, we were greeted by the Count who took us on a tour of the chateau(which has been in his family since the 12th century!) and ended with a wine tasting in the 12th century kitchen! The count and his family were living in a museum, how does it get any better! "

The tour was much like I expected it to be. Some hotel accommodations were better than others, but all rooms were clean and comfortable and the hotel staffs were friendly and accommodating. All of the group dinners were very good with menus representative of the various regions we visited. The tour itself was nicely paced and our guide, Julie, was delightful. The tour was at its best when we experienced things that were “hidden gems” and appeared to be unique to the Rick Steves experience.

"There were several “wow” moments from the tour but one stand out was the visit to the Count’s castle at Chateau De Rully. What an amazing experience to sit in a kitchen from the 1200s for a wine tasting following a tour of the castle. The group picnic lunch on the grounds of the estate was an added bonus to the day. "

Our Eastern France Tour was exceptional. Our tour guide Virginie was superb - extraordinary deep of knowledge about French history, culture, food, wine, and the regions we visited. "On this tour there were so many “wow” moments. Here are a few. First, my wife went parasailing in Chamonix – so thrilling and peaceful. I was at the landing location to capture her last 10 minutes in the sky and as she landed. Second, our dinners were excellent. Also, Virginie’s restaurant recommendations were first rate. Third, we were thrilled to visit Steve for a “surprise picnic” in his French countryside home. Both Steve and his 99-year old father entertained us. Fourth, the Mourchon "

Other tour attendees were nice, nobody was a problem (which is typical for RS tours) Negatives: Colmar, 3 days too much and the dinner was terrible (charcroute). More time in Chamonix would have been great

"Chamonix was fantastic, definitely the highlight of the trip. The gondolas at Brevent were great. (Aguille du Midi not so much.) Paragliding in Chamonix on our "day off" was over the top good. I know that paragliding is not an official activity; it is not something I ever thought I would do, but I overheard another participant asking Chris about it (while on the bus ride to Chamonix) and it made me curious, so I asked Chris about it and we (myself, husband, and our friend) all decided to do it"

I was very excited to do this tour with my husband, Rob. We had these 13 days on tour and 2 additional weeks organized in Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. We took the train from CDG airport the day before the tour started in Reims , but got off the train before the station across from the hotel. We walked all the way from Madison Blanche through the city with Google maps. I thought I had followed all the instructions, obviously misunderstood something. Once we got to the beautiful hotel, great!

Eastern France from Reims in the north to Aix-en-Provence in the south offers a variety of heritage, history, and small town charm. I appreciated the unhurried pace to explore each town and its surroundings. The local guides brought to life each one’s history and essence. Vineyard hosts were gracious and informative. The food was delicious and as usual a wonderful sampling of local cuisines…..and wines, of course. A delightful experience once again.

This was our 4th Rick Steves’ tour. It met traveler expectations, however the guide, Daniela Wedel, exceeded expectations. The itinerary allowed for wine tastings in multiple regions, however Daniela created optional impromptu “happy hours” to allow our group to gather to learn more about the regional offerings. The group bonded quickly and unlike other tours where there may be a few you don’t readily recall their name, this group went home making many new friends.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Actually there were 2. The first was the wine tour at Domaine de Mourchon. Despite being toward the end of trip and having walked other vineyards, the owner did an impeccable job explaining why their wines exhibit unique qualities. The tour included vine to bottle wine making and tasting multiple varieties. The best part was the incredible lunch on the exquisite patio enjoying fine wine, great food, and wonderful company! The next was Mont Blanc with the weather breaking and clear views. "

It was an amazing tour; more than I expected. I was totally blessed to travel with such a great group of folks; they were fun, attentive and looked out for one another, Daniela was a wonderful guide; so knowledgeable, organized, personal and caring. Our bus driver Hilde greeted us each day with laughter; such a skilled driver.

"Wow moment was standing atop Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix. Was a perfect sunny day. The views simply breathtaking and was in awe learning of those who explored and dedicated their lives to the mountains."

"My favorite "wow" moment was a happy hour arranged by our tour guide, that turned into an entire evening of camaraderie and joy. Everyone brought food and wine, and a group of strangers turned into bonded friends!"
When To Go & Weather
Any time between May and October is a good time to take a Best of Eastern France tour. However, the months of May, September, and October are best for offering generally good weather, lighter crowds, and the full range of tourist fun.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Paris (CDG or ORY) and out of Marseille (MRS) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Paris is a 45-minute train ride from Reims (where the tour begins), and the Marseille airport is a 30-minute bus ride from Aix-en-Provence (where the tour ends). Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in France. There are direct TGV (fast) trains from Aix-en-Provence to Paris and Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves France guidebook.
