Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Ireland
Meet your guide and fellow tour members at our hotel at 5 p.m. After a group meeting, we'll enjoy a "Welcome to Ireland" dinner together, followed by an orientation walk through the heart of Dublin.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.
Day 2: The Historic Heart of Dublin
This morning we'll take a walking tour through Dublin, including a stop at Trinity College for an illuminating look at the remarkable Book of Kells, a creative jolt that helped pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. We'll continue on, learning about the city's rich history, from the days of Viking raids to the hard centuries of British occupation to the proud and progressive city of today. You'll have the rest of the day free to feel the pulse of a city thriving with street poets and musicians.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Dublin.
Day 3: Kilmainham Gaol and Monumental Ruins
On our way out of Dublin, we'll stop at Kilmainham Gaol and learn about its place in Ireland's stirring struggle for independence a little more than a century ago. Then we'll continue to the green Plain of Tipperary, and the Rock of Cashel. We'll tour Cashel's evocative ruins and the cluster of medieval buildings that became a major ecclesiastical center of Ireland. Our day will end with dinner together in the picturesque harbor town of Kinsale.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Kinsale.
Day 4: Kinsale and Charles Fort
This morning we'll be treated to a walking tour that brings Kinsale's past to life, places its story in the wider sweep of history, and makes the stony sights much more than buildings. Inspired by all we've learned, we'll continue on to explore the massive and revolutionary (for its time) Charles Fort, which overlooks the harbor. You'll have the afternoon and evening free to make your own discoveries in Kinsale, known as Ireland's gourmet capital.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: ½ hour. Sleep in Kinsale.
Day 5: Killarney National Park and Dingle
Today we'll take a scenic drive along the forests (Ireland's largest), mountains, and lakes of Killarney National Park. Then we'll balance-off this peacefulness with a visit to a local sheep farm, marveling at its talented dogs in action. We'll end our day in Dingle, where we'll enjoy dinner together in one of the country's best traditional music scenes.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Dingle (group may be split between two B&Bs).
Day 6: Gaelic Heritage
It's a great day to experience some of Europe's wildest natural beauty and most ancient Christian sights. We'll start our day with a crystal cutting demonstration from a master craftsman, then hop aboard our bus with a local expert to follow the famous Slea Head Drive, our vote for the most beautiful road in Ireland. We'll stop to tour the strikingly designed Great Blasket Centre, where we'll get an intimate look at the language, literature, and daily life of a traditional Gaelic Blasket community. Tonight, we'll return to Dingle for as much dancing and singing with new friends as we can handle.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Dingle.
Day 7: Roam the Dingle Peninsula
Today is all yours…free on the Dingle Peninsula. Take a long walk along the local paths and lanes, rent a bicycle and pedal the scenic 30-mile Dingle Loop, sail for the day to the rugged Blasket Islands, or simply savor your generous Irish breakfast and hang out in town.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). No bus. Sleep in Dingle.
Day 8: Cliffs of Moher and the Burren
This morning we'll drive through County Clare to the dramatic Cliffs of Moher, where you'll find yourself leaning into the wind and teetering on the very edge of Europe more than 600 feet above the churning waters of the North Atlantic. Farther up the road, we'll explore the rocky moonscape of the Burren to learn about its unique ecosystem and hardy prehistoric residents. Tonight we'll share dinner together in Galway.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Galway.
Day 9: Galway and the Aran Islands
This morning we'll hop aboard a ferry bound for the stark beauty of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands. There you can join your guide for a minibus tour 'round this dramatic island, including the site of its ancient, cliff-hanging Celtic fortress, Dun Aengus. Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own.
Light to strenuous walking (your choice). Boat: 2 hours. Bus: 2 hours. Sleep in Galway.
Day 10: Connemara Countryside
Today we'll drive through the Connemara region, enjoying the beautiful Irish countryside. We'll stop in the charming town of Cong (where Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne filmed The Quiet Man in 1951), stroll through the picturesque abbey ruins, and visit the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle. Then we'll drive north to County Mayo and Westport, where we'll settle in for the evening.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Westport.
Day 11: To Northern Ireland
We'll seamlessly cross into Northern Ireland today. In Derry, a local guide will take us on a tour of the town, sharing stories about "the Troubles" and the infamous "Bloody Sunday" of 1972. Then we'll drive on to the nostalgic seaside resort of Portrush, with time for an evening stroll along the strand and dinner.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Portrush.
Day 12: Antrim Coast
Today we'll explore Northern Ireland's spectacular Antrim Coast, marveling at the bizarre basalt columns and local legends of the Giant's Causeway. Then stop for a look at the romantic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on a clifftop overlooking the North Atlantic before testing your nerve teetering across the scenic Carrick-a-Rede rope footbridge (optional, wind permitting). Watch your step while enjoying the fine views and the great seabirds soaring. Then we're off to the capital of the North, Belfast.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Sleep in Belfast.
Day 13: Belfast and the Titanic
This morning we'll begin our day at the Titanic Belfast visitor experience, located on the very site where the great ship was built. Next, a local guide will board our coach for a rolling tour that takes us through historic Belfast and along reminders of the past decades' Troubles, including the striking political murals of Shankill and Falls Road. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore more of Belfast. Tonight we'll kick up our heels at a tasty farewell supper together, where we'll share travel memories and toast new friends. Sláinte!
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep in Belfast.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. You can fly out of Belfast or Dublin's handy airports. For those not ready to return home yet, both cities are a great jumping off point to Paris, London, Amsterdam, and many other exciting destinations. Your guide will help you with any post-tour planning, leaving you well prepared for the road ahead. Slán leat!

Our tour guide Lolly and her assistant Keisue were the absolute best. We had storm Ashley interrupt our Cliffs of Moher adventure but Lolly was able to pivot on a dime and we ended up having an amazing day at Adare and taking a tour through a castle. Both Lolly and Keisue were so kind and friendly while being so professional and I really can’t stress how much I appreciate and admire them. I hope anyone who is considering taking this trip in the future is lucky enough to have either of them!

"My favorite moment was when we went to the Cliffs at the Aran Isles! My aunt and I hung over the side on our stomachs and the sights of the bottle green waves crashing against the rocks will forever be burned into my memory. Every walk or hike that we did was always absolutely amazing and Lolly was so helpful at telling us the best ways to walk or what to see so we would get the best sights or experiences. "

This was an excellent tour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It met all expectations. It was a perfect blend of history, culture, landscape, challenging physical activities, traditional music, food and pubs. Lolly and Kaisu were top-notch guides to this wonderful land. I enjoyed the interesting lectures on the bus. With Hurricane Ashley, we experienced changes to the itinerary which were handled smoothly and responsibly. The group was very compatible; no spoilers which is a rarity

My travel in Europe has always been self curated. I very rarely travel in an organized group setting. A couple of my hesitations were the size of the group and bus travel. I was extremely grateful to be traveling with the group we had in Ireland and loved being on the bus! We had plenty of room and the view from the bus was far better than a car. Our guide, Lolly, was the highlight of the trip. She brought Ireland to life with the history, poems and music she shared on the bus and on walks.

"Storm Ashley happened while we were leaving Dingle on our way to Galway. While the storm only lasted a day, the winds left a trail of destruction. While in Cong, visiting the Abbey on our way to The Ireland School of Falconry, the usual short walk was blocked by downed trees. We ventured through the forest on an alternate path only to encounter yet more trees blocking the path. Finally, after a few phone calls to the School and a longer path through the woods we made it to our destination!"

Joe our guide and Martin our driver and the amazing, friendly, and cheery guests on this tour, along with the huge variety of places and things to see and do made this tour an absolute delight. This was the tour that was "covid cancelled" and it was so happy finally to be able to attend. Lots of learning, lots of playing, and always some free time to explore a bit more. The countries and their people were friendly and helpful, and a delight to get to know even for a little bit of time.

"Any time I was able to hike the cliffs along the water was a wow. Both as part of the tour (at Great Blasket Center, on the Cliffs of Moher even in the pouring rain, climbing to Dun Aengus on Inishmore Island, walking the Giant's Causeway trail, and crossing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge) and in my free time (hiking the cliffs out to the lighthouse in Howth and the Dingle inlet out to the lighthouse) - all of my outdoor experiences in Ireland were fantastic!"

"One of my wow moments had to be standing on the end of the Dingle Peninsula and watching the waves come crashing in. Not living near a large body of water, this was an amazing experience. I loved hearing the waves. I waited for the tallest waves to come crashing into the rocks. The sheer sides of the cliffs were so awe-inspiring. This experience was inspiration for a poem I wrote on the trip."

Very enjoyable experience. Joe was a treat! Martin was a fabulous bus driver. He got us through some very sketchy roads through horrible weather. I enjoyed most of the stops. Much more than I expected of a small island. This was our 6th tour with Rick Steves, and everything was I expected - great accommodations and our guide was fantastic. But Ireland - the land and people - far exceeded - I absolutely loved it
Favorite "WOW" moment
"favorite Wow moments were the giants causeway, the coastal drive, the aran islands - hard to pick just one; but my favorite moments were sitting in pubs with a pint listening to music with the locals. "

This was my first international trip and I could not imagine having had a more enjoyable experience. So well planned and organized. Accommodations were great, tour experiences very memorable, and our tour guide…he was just the best… informative, entertaining, and so personable. I was captivated with Ireland’s beauty, history, and people. A full schedule of amazing experiences with just enough unscheduled free time to explore. A quality adventure in every particular that I will always treasure.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Almost too many wow moments to single one out but maybe our day at Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-rede. So spectacular and beautiful! However, every town was so charming and a favorite as well. I was surprised to find the landscape and feel of Northern Ireland as stunning as the Republic. Also my trip to Newgrange and in particular to Knowth(which I did on my own) was incredible. "

"This is always the hardest question, as there are so many “Wow!” Moments. As I have to choose one, I would say that standing on Carrack-a-Rede Island, looking across the sea and being able to clearly see Islay, Scotland (home of my favorite single malt scotches) just about dislocated my jaw. It was an incredible sight!"

Pascal is an excellent guide. The scenery was beautiful. Lots of tourists everywhere. Kinsale was a welcome relief from the crowds and was the most enjoyable town we visited. The best vacation we've ever had! We are so glad we choose a Rick Steves Tour; it took the worry out of planning a trip on our own. We never would have seen or done so much without being on this tour. At every turn, we were in awe of the beauty, history, and scenery of Ireland. We enjoyed getting to know our tour group, some of whom became friends. Our tour guide, Conor, was the very best! Conor planned a lot of surprises for us along the way that made the trip even more exceptional.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"The scenery for sure was where we experienced most of our favorite "wow" moments. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, "Wow!" we were taken to another place that was even more beautiful, such as the Cliffs of Moher, Ashford Castle, and Charles Fort. We were also "wowed" by the authentic Irish music and dance. Our tour guide scheduled special music sessions for us along the way, especially in Dingle. We were "wowed" by the O Se family that played for us at the B&B Heaton's Guesthouse."

A small group of us chose to go while the rest of the tour stayed and played in Galway. As it turned out, our visit to Inishmore was glorious. This is my 8th RS tour. My first R S tour. The size of the group was excellent (less than 30) with plenty of room to spread out on the bus and easy to regather the group after an excursion. The tour guide was enthusiastic , knowledgeable, and set the tone for the trip. At times too much talk on the bus by the guide. Hotels were ok, one particularly bad in Portrush that shouldn't be used. Would be nice to have more time in Galway. Overall, a good experience.

Loved first trip to Ireland - beautiful country and tour hit wonderful quieter towns, great hotels, terrific guide. Loved his and other guides’ proud sense of Ireland’s hard history and independence. Our tour guide, Conor, was knowledgeable in all of the areas that we visited and presented all of the information in an interesting, understandable way. The local tour guides were also outstanding, although the tour guide for the Rock of Cashel was a little hard to follow, because he spoke so quickly. The Hotels, except for one , were very clean, comfortable, and inviting. The food that we had at our group dinners was very good. The whole itinerary of places that we visited was very good!

"There were so many "wow" moments, but the one that immediately comes to mind, happened at the Blasket Center. After we had our tour of the center and the informative video, we walked down the pathway to the ocean. The landscape and the ocean were breathtaking. There was such beauty in the different colors of the landscape and the ocean. The sound of the crashing waves was music to my ears and the air was so clear, clean and crisp."

My tour of Ireland was everything I hoped for and more. I’ve only been on one Rick Steves tour before - Greece in 2023. It was a great experience, also. Near seconds were wandering over the incredible geological feature that is The Giant’s Causeway, and learning about that famous ship's history in the Titanic Belfast Museum."

I felt acquainted with a country that I thought I knew. That re-connection made real those pictures and ideas I had shaped from afar. Dublin became a livable city, Kinsale entered my field of perception, Dingle became a favorite, Belfast a more realistic picture. Guide Joe was excellent, Velcro-ing snippets together with big ideas. The food routine - satisfying. The hotels - better than I remembered. The promised attractions delivered but it was the unexpected visits that glued the experience.

"Realizing why Ireland is so green. Mid 60s for highs, little freezing or snow, steady moisture – and standing in it made me say – Of Course! The rugged west, with the Slea Head drive making the senses work overtime. Throw in history and the Blaskets and it was so memorable. St Stephen’s Green beckoned so strongly, so relaxedly. The color of Kinsale was a delight. The tensions of Ireland – Northern Ireland is so profound – so much anger amidst so much bucolic countryside, and more. "

This is our fifth Rick Steves' Europe tour. We absolutely love RS Tours. The intimate experience, outstanding tour guides and seamless logistics make the experience so wonderful. We enjoyed our guide, Declan. He was a wealth of information and was extremely passionate about Ireland, and its history and culture. When To Go & Weather
Any time between April and October is a good time to visit Ireland. However, the months of April, May, September, and October are best for offering fewer crowds, mild weather, and the full range of tourist fun. Summers come with longer days and better (yet still mild) weather, but larger crowds, which mostly affect Dublin.
Ireland / Dublin
Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email, as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly in and out of Dublin (DUB). If you prefer to fly out of Belfast (BFS), select "multicity" on flight-booking websites. The coach from Belfast direct to Dublin Airport takes about two hours and departs hourly 24 hours a day. Your guide can help you book it when you arrive.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Ireland guidebook.
