Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Sweden
We'll meet at our Stockholm hotel at 4 p.m. for a "Välkomna till Skandinavia" get-together, followed by dinner and an orientation walk around our neighborhood.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. No bus. Sleep in Stockholm.
Day 2: Stockholm's Old City and the Vasa
This morning we'll enjoy a walking tour through the cobbled alleyways of Stockholm's Gamla Stan (Old City), learning about its historic Stortorget Square, cathedral, and Royal Palace. After free time for lunch, we'll board a boat and cross the harbor to visit the Vasa Museum, where we'll marvel at the remains of the 200-foot warship Vasa, which sank here on her maiden voyage nearly 400 years ago. Your late afternoon is free to explore more of this cosmopolitan city.
Strenuous walking: 2–8 miles throughout the day with lots of hills, stairs, and uneven terrain. No bus. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Stockholm.
Day 3: Modern Stockholm and Cozy Kalmar
This morning we'll tour Stockholm's City Hall, home of the Nobel Prize banquet and striking mosaic murals celebrating humanism and the ideal of people working together in community. Then, after stopping along the Göta Canal for a lunch break, we'll drive through beautiful birch forests on our way to the seafaring, bridge-and-water-laced town of Kalmar.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in Kalmar.
Day 4: Kalmar Castle and Copenhagen
Today we'll explore what may be Sweden's most striking, historically significant building: bay-and-moat-ringed Kalmar Castle. As we tour the castle's interior and beautiful grounds, we'll learn about Sweden's 16th-century struggle for independence from the Danes. Then, to reach Copenhagen, we'll drive across the awe-inspiring five-mile Öresund bridge and tunnel connecting Sweden and Denmark. We'll get to know our neighborhood by strolling up to the lively Strøget pedestrian center, followed by dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 5 hours. Sleep in Copenhagen.
Day 5: Playful and Progressive Copenhagen
This morning we'll dive into the sights and sounds of Copenhagen's historical center on a walking tour with a local guide. The rest of your day is free to enjoy Europe's best people-watching on the Strøget, tour the National Museum, visit the fanciful Tivoli Gardens, or experience the counterculture of Christiania.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Copenhagen.
Day 6: Viking Ships and Ærø Island Charms
After breakfast we'll drive to Roskilde to prowl through the evocative Viking Ship Museum, where we'll learn about the rough-and-tumble, yet surprisingly sophisticated Viking culture of a thousand years ago. We'll also visit Denmark's venerable Roskilde Cathedral (when available), the resting place of 38 kings and queens of Denmark and the first Gothic church ever built of brick. Then a scenic ferry ride will take us to the nostalgic little island of Ærø and the old windjammer port of Ærøskøbing. Tonight we'll enjoy an orientation to the old town and a traditional Danish feast together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 4 hours. Boat: 1½ hours. Sleep on the island of Ærø (groups may be split between two B&Bs).
Day 7: All Day to Explore Ærø Island
You'll have the morning free to relax and savor this epitome of small-town Denmark, or get Ærø-dynamic and pedal a rented bike past thatched cottages, tidy farms, and windswept bluffs. We'll regroup this afternoon for a bus tour of the island. We'll return to Ærøskøbing, where you'll be free for dinner and the rest of the evening. The pub by the harbor is a fun place to meet the locals.
Walking light to strenuous: your choice. Bus: 3 hours. Sleep on the island of Ærø.
Day 8: Coastal Sweden
Today we'll sail off the island of Ærø as we drive up the Swedish coastline to the seaside town of Varberg. Along the way we'll stop for lunch before saying "farvel" to Denmark. In the quaint town of Varberg, your guide will provide an orientation before setting you free for dinner on your own.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 5 hours. Boat: 2 hours. Sleep in Varberg.
Day 9: Swedish Fishing and Artistic Oslo
Our final destination today is Norway and its capitol, Oslo. Along the way, we'll stop at charming 19th century boathouse and take a boat ride through the Swedish west coast archipelago to commune with the sea and local fishermen. We'll have a light seafood lunch together before continuing our journey to Oslo. After arrival, we'll visit Frogner Park, home to Gustav Vigeland's whimsical, lifelike sculptures just before our "Welcome to Oslo" dinner together.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. Bus: 4½ hours. Boat: 1 hour. Sleep in Oslo.
Day 10: Historic Oslo and Norway's Seafaring Past
This morning we will take a walking tour around the harbor and through the heart of Oslo, learning about Norway's history and politics along the way. With your Oslo Pass (giving you free admission to most museums and public transportation), you'll have plenty of free time to visit the Norwegian Resistance Museum or your choice of the city's other fine museums. Your guide will also orient you to the short boat ride to Bygdøy peninsula where you will find a treasure trove of nautical history, such as the Fram Museum, Maritime Museum, and Kon-Tiki Museum. The evening is free to explore even more of the city and it's nightlife.
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Boat: ½ hour. Sleep in Oslo.
Day 11: Norwegian Traditions and Scenic Mountains
Driving out of Oslo, today we'll learn about daily Norwegian life and traditions. We'll tour a Norwegian Open-Air Folk Museum, including its array of sod-roofed farmhouses, village storefronts, and artisan workshops. After a scenic afternoon drive through farmland and forests, we'll settle into our cozy mountain hotel, and share a traditional dinner together.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Sleep in the Norwegian Mountains.
Day 12: Fjord Country and Bergen
Make sure your camera is ready: Today is scenery day! We'll drive past a mountain panorama of glittering snow and unforgettable natural beauty as we head to Norway's longest and deepest fjord, Sognefjord. After lunch, we'll hop aboard a boat for a 2-hour scenic Sognefjord cruise between cliffs and waterfalls. Then we're back aboard our bus for one more scenic stretch of highway before you're free for dinner and the rest of the evening in Bergen.
Light walking: 2–4 miles throughout the day on mostly level terrain. Bus: 6 hours. Boat: 2½ hours. Sleep in Bergen.
Day 13: All Day in Charming Bergen
This morning our guide will walk us through the salty history of this seafaring town, including the enchanting old Hanseatic wharf area, where wooden warehouses lean together and recall their glory days as a center of North Atlantic trade. To cap off our morning, we'll ride the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen for thrilling views of Bergen, islands, and fjords. The rest of your afternoon is free to do some hiking, explore more of Bergen, or buy one of those hand-knit wool sweaters that caught your eye back at the wharf. This evening we'll gather for a hearty Norwegian feast to share travel memories and toast new friends. Skål!
Moderate walking: 2–6 miles throughout the day with some hills and stairs. No bus. Sleep in Bergen.
Day 14: Tour Over After Breakfast
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Those returning home can catch a short flight from Bergen to Copenhagen, London, or other European cities for your direct flight home. Farvel!

"Lovely Aero Island in Denmark was so very charming. The pace of life was calm and relaxing and the town of Aeroskobing was a delight. I also loved the mountains of Norway which were so beautiful it's difficult to find the words to describe them. There were so many gushing rivers and waterfalls and rivulets everywhere you looked. The terrain was green and lush. "

I am half Norwegian, so I was excited to see my home country, learn the history and experience the culture. Rick Steves tours always encourage learning some of the language, but Scandinavian words are hard to pronounce! Gabriella was the perfect guide - she is so knowledgeable, has a great sense of humor and is full of energy and life! She seamlessly dealt with several hiccups along the way, with the help of Leif, our bus driver.

"Gabby put together a “happy hour” on the bus, on our way to Bergen. We had had two long bus rides in a row and this is what good guides do. She served wine leftover from the day’s picnic lunch and snacks. She handed over her phone, to take requests for a party music playlist. And when we came to tunnel construction and Leif knew exactly how long the stop would be, he got up and danced down the aisle - Gabby and others joined in! "

We were offered a meat, fish, or vegetarian option. I wish I had known before the trip that the group would be using WhatsApp to share information. I was enthralled with the open-air folk museums at Skansen and Valdres, The musical presentation, old farm houses, and costume exhibits were just magical. The Nordic Museum in Stockholm was a particular highlight of my free time. I enjoyed everything on the tour!"

I highly recommend the Scandinavia tour. It was our first trip to these 3 countries and our 6th RS trip overall. These are countries a tad less traveled than some of the others, but they are all beautiful in their own right. The major cities of each, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Bergen are all quite pedestrian friendly and I felt very safe. Would highly recommend this tour.

"There isn't one specific moment, but a few things that come to mind were the beauty of Stockholm and Oslo. Very neat, exciting, modern cities, with tons of things to do. Museums, parks, waterways, nightlife. The fjords and sheer beauty of Norway is something to behold as well."

This was one of my favorite tours! Scandanavia was beautiful and the cool temperatures were a treat! I liked that the stays in the large cities were followed by time in smaller towns - a good variety. We covered a lot of ground to get to know these three beauti countries. I loved the local guides and the freedom they felt they had to answer our questions as fully as they did. I expect and appreciate this from a “Rick Steves Tour”. The Scandinavian people seem to be together on making their democracies work. Very encouraging in light of our American politics. With the Alabama humidity and temperatures, we could not have picked a better time to be in these beautiful countries.

The tour exceeded my expectations! Our tour guide, Heidi, was phenomenal. She was friendly, caring, organized and shared many interesting details on Scandinavian life - you could not ask for a better tour guide. The tour was great, and she made it phenomenal. It was great having somebody deal with the logistics of the trip so I didn't have to plan it myself. Also, I was able to see places I wouldn't have gone to mentioned in the Rick Steves' guide book, such as Æro Island.

"Æro Island was amazing. The hotel we stayed at (På Torvet) was straight out of a Pottery Barn catalog - breathtaking. The city, Ærøskøbing, was magical. Loved the hundreds of years old brightly colored cottages and the beach walk (from Rick Steves' guide book - walking tour), and the guided tour, and the success story of how the town pulled together to save it. It would be a good place to stay for a relaxing month! I would never have gone here if I had planned the trip myself. "

Overall, the tour was enjoyable and educational. The tour was my first trip to Europe, and my ancestry is Swedish and Norwegian. These things made the trip especially engaging and satisfying. Experiencing the grand effects of nature, similar, but in another part of the world, and being on the water that created those changes was a "Wow" experience for me. It was well planned and thought out. From the orientation to the “last supper’ together, the sites, tours, experiences, bonding with fellow travelers built on one other for a remarkable social, cultural and educational experience. But having to pick just one "wow" I would say it was Day 9, when we enjoyed the boat ride through the Archipelago with a local fisherman, and then as a group shared a simple but very tasty lunch in the charming boat house. There were so many facets to it--being out on the water and seeing a very different landscape, learning about the area and its history, and enjoying each others company on the boat and over the excellent noon time meal. This was our first Rick Steves tour, but not our last! We'd traveled independently using Rick's tour guides, so we expected to stay in beautiful hotels and see exciting places. However, the convenience of having a two-week tour expertly organized for us made our vacation much more enjoyable and stress-free. Traveling with a small group of pleasant companions and a knowledgeable tour guide enhanced the experience. We look forward to our next Rick Steves adventure!

This was our 2nd Rick Steves tour. It was more of a TASTE of Scandinavia - very rush rush rush. Wish we had spent more time in Copenhagen, and aero island. I thought Ylva was an excellent tour guide in terms of knowledge, but was not always sensitive to the group’s needs, for instance she told us at one point that we could go to the bathroom on the bus or use the woods outside. Although I understood the need for a strict timeline, there was a lot of rushing us that felt pressured

It is a pleasure to report that our 14 Day Scandinavian trip was simply outstanding! The itinerary lived up to Rick Steve’s promise to give an overview of the countries providing us with a feel for the cultural perspective on the lives of the people. "I have to say it was the motorcycle with a side-car tour of Oslo that my daughter arranged for our personal time was definitely a highlight. We also loved the quiet pastoral countryside on the island of Aero. Our first day in Stockholm which was on a Sunday before the tour began is very memorable in that city was quiet with no traffic because businesses were closed. It reminded me of Sundays when I was a child in the US before we got so commercialized. We loved the Danish Christmas dinner!"

This tour has a lot of bus riding. There are long distances covered. The hotels were mostly good and the food was pork and fish. All the breakfasts were very good. The tour guide was a 6 . She was heavy on history and light on art music and philosophy. She was organized and kept us on schedule, sometimes starting early before everyone had gathered. "Observing why Scandinavian countries constantly rank among the happiest on earth. While so many Americans shake their fists at fellow citizens for lifestyle choices that don’t affect their own lives at all, the folks here could give a whit about how others live their lives—preferring a hygge life appreciation instead. (Look it up, or better yet, come witness it yourself.) But my actual WOW 'moment' was the magical walk through Viegland Sculpture Park—Oslo’s stunning outdoor art gallery."

This was our ninth RS tour and one of the best. The beauty of the area was amazing. The cities seemed less crowded, and the people in all three countries were very friendly. English was spoken so frequently that it was easy to forget we were in Europe. We were fortunate to have Nina, a competent and friendly guide. She was great at leading our amazing tour group through their paces. What a fun, compatible, friendly group of people from all over the country. Overall, a great trip.

Seamless. I learned so much from all the guides but it was the little things, local snacks on the bus, learning about local culture, government, history from Nina that made the trip extra special.

"Day 1 in Gamla Stan, Nina and the local guide gave us powerful history but he took us into his home! We asked all the questions we had about day to day life and everything else we could think of and he was so accommodating. The rest of the tour was consistent with that experience. I realized how absolutely well prepared everything having to do with a Rick Steves tour would be. I am still just blown away from the experience. I am already looking forward to our next one!"

This trip was in late May to early June and the daytime population density in Copenhagen was intense. Except for open plazas, it seemed to me very crowded while walking down the sidewalk or a “pedestrian” street. Someone spotted a tour boat during a boat tour and maybe this was the cause, but I have never felt so crowded within a city. The trip to Aero was nice but what to do but go on a bike ride, which I did. These two things result in my downgrade to very good rather than outstanding.
Favorite "WOW" moment
"Kronberg Castle and the fjords. The castle in Kalmar Sweden may be impressive but to me what was more visually stunning was the Kronborg castle located adjacent the short lunch stop in Helsinger Denmark. Just viewing the massiveness of this towering structure and thinking that this castle had at one time three moats (?) surrounding it was just “jaw dropping.” The fjords, the true highlight of this trip, did not disappoint in making one feel small and insignificant."

The Scandinavia tour exceeded my expectations with a fun group and a super great guide, Gabriella. Her bus narratives were so informative and her suggestions for places to eat, see, shop and SWIM were invaluable to me. Stockholm was my favorite hotel, Christmas dinner in Aero was my favorite meal and the Kon-tiki museum in Oslo was my favorite museum. As my 11th Rick Steves tour, this one should not be missed. You’ll cover a lot of space and learn a lot of Nordic history. Thank you, Gabriella.

He settled near Lacrosse, Wisconsin, bought farm land, and then served in the Civil War. As our tour group left Oslo, bound for the Valdres (Open Air) Folks Museum, I "pinned" his birthplace on a Google Map. We came within 2 km of his birthplace (Follinglo Farm)"

When To Go & Weather
Any time between May and September is a good time to visit Scandinavia. However, the summer months, while the most crowded, offer the best weather and long days. The months of May and September are best for combining minimal crowds and mild weather.

Hotels & Flights
Tour Hotels
In case you wish to book pre- or post-tour hotel accommodations, the contact information for the tour's first and last hotels is included in your tour confirmation email as well as in the Itinerary section of your tour account. One month prior to the tour departure, you'll find the directions to your first tour hotel and a complete list of hotels where we'll be staying while on tour in the Documents section of your tour account.
Flights
Our tours don't include airfare, so your flight arrangements and transfers are completely up to you.
Most tour members arrange to fly into Stockholm (ARN) and out of Bergen (BGO) — choose "multicity" on flight-booking websites. Booking round-trip to one city will require a connecting flight, train trip, or additional overnight stay in Scandinavia.
We suggest arriving a day or two before your tour begins to allow ample time to get over jet lag and be well-rested for the first few days of your tour. For more information about transportation options for getting to and from your tour, see your Rick Steves Scandinavia guidebook.
