Rick Steves Iceland (160 words)
In this one-hour special, we get to know Iceland's majestic landscapes and hardy culture. In Reykjavík — a world capital with a small-town feel — we tour the endearing sights; browse for sweaters, taste fermented shark, and learn Icelandic insights with a local; and take a dip in a thermal swimming pool. For a side-trip into Icelandic nature, the classic Golden Circle links tectonic gorges, bubbling geysers, thundering waterfalls, prancing horses, and otherworldly landscapes. After visiting the South Coast's black-sand beaches, fording glacial rivers in the desolate valley of Thórsmörk, and setting sail to the volcano-shaped Westman Islands (to look for puffins), we set out on Europe's ultimate road trip: the Ring Road, looping 800 miles around Iceland on Highway 1. The journey leads through a world of glaciers and fjords to the geothermal hotspot of Lake Mývatn, before finishing with a spin around scenic Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Along the way, we brake for slice-of-Icelandic-life museums, sod-roofed settlements, whale watching, and steaming volcanoes.
